From the late 1950s, Boris Lurie (1924–2008) and Wolf Vostell (1932–1998) adopted a radical approach to the tragedy of the Jewish people. They made the Shoah – Shoah is the Hebrew word for “catastrophe”, synonym to the Holocaust – the central theme of their art at a time when a part of society still looked upon the subject of the war as a taboo. With works that combined the most horrific pictures of war crimes with the superficial imagery of advertising, they took to task post-war consumer societies that tried to start a new life without giving a thought to the trauma suffered by Jews and others. Both artists incorporated the latest techniques into their works to attain this shocking effect. This is the first time that their confrontational art has been shown together in Hungary, making this exhibition a must-see.
