The premiere of Tamás Juronics’s choreography for Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra was the closing performance of the 2021 Bartók Spring, with thousands watching the streamed show all over the world. Since then, the ballet has been performed in front of a live audience only once. In it, the composer is a character, and his own well-known dramatis personae, Bluebeard, the Mandarin and the Wooden Prince, appear on stage as his visions.
The Szeged Contemporary Dance Company now presents Concerto with two other productions, made for the compositions of two young composers. In 2020 Tamás Juronics sat on the jury of Müpa Budapest’s Composition Competition. “Dániel Lázár’s piece immediately caught my attention, as it is a consistent, rhythmically very danceable work of about twenty minutes, and was written by the composer as a dance etude. The other thing that moved me was the work of Viktor Molnár, which has complexity, strength, dramatic tension, and an occasionally spine-chilling mood that defies its length of merely nine minutes.”
