Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, one of the most original and best-known artists in the history of Hungarian painting, was born 170 years ago. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs have exceptionally rich collections of his life’s work, and the two institutions now pay tribute to the painter genius with a joint exhibition.
The last time a comparably lavish exhibition was held in Budapest was in 1963, while visitors to the Pécs museum can see the treasures of the metropolitan collection for the first time. Iconic paintings such as Csontváry’s famous Self-Portrait and the Lonely Cedar, the Ruins of Greek Theatre at Taormina and The Great Tar Creek in the Tatras are now shown together.

The exhibition is on view between 14 April and 16 July.
