Spiritualized, one of the best and most important British bands of the last 30 years, who play a heady mix of psychedelic and space rock, gospel and soul, will play their first concert in Hungary on 7 April. It’s a not-to-be-missed event, and here’s a song from each of their ten albums to show you why.
Shine A Light (1992)
After the dissolution of noise rock pioneers Spacemen 3, Jason Pierce, aka J. Spaceman, continued his dreamy, floaty, ethereal take-offs with Spiritualized.
Lay Back In The Sun (1995)
A record with exuberantly orchestrated, perfectly constructed songs that culminate now in an explosive orgy of noise, now in an ambient symphony shot into space.
Ladies And Gentleman We Are Floating In Space (1997)
Exquisite, stunning melodies, a constant play with the uplifting effect of repetition, intensification and the variation of motifs.
Broken Heart (live, 1998)
And they are of course among the world’s best when in concert; here’s their monumental take on the song of broken love.
Do It All Over Again (2001)
‘Nothing hurts you like the pain of someone you love,’ sings Spaceman on the 2001 album, on which this impatient song proves that he also excels at singing out happiness.
Lay It Down Slow (2003)
Gospely and goosefleshy as usual, the last number on what is the band’s most spontaneous album to date shows the masters of closing songs in full glory.
Soul On Fire (2008)
Inspired by illnesses and hospital treatments, the weighty 2008 LP’s more ambient, acoustic, string-laden material also contains some heartfelt, expansive songs.
Hey Jane (2012)
Along with its angelic, ethereal side, Spiritualized can always pull off amazing psychedelic moments: here’s some blues/gospel/soul/noise rock over some motoric beat.
Damaged (2018)
Nor have they ever stopped being perfect at conveying a sense of infinity in music – as here, for instance.
Always Together With You (2022)
The opening track of the last album to date is like the monumental closing number of other bands. Whichever they will play at the concert, we’ll have a great time.
