For the music of Il Tamerlano (also known as Bajazet), which was premiered in 1735, Vivaldi revised arias from his earlier operas for the new libretto, and also borrowed from the works of such popular composers of the day as Johann Adolf Hasse and Geminiano Giacomelli. Making such a pasticcio was not unheard of or frowned upon, and Il Tamerlano now delights us with a splendid cross section of mature Italian baroque opera and dazzles with a firework of vocal performance. At Müpa Budapest, this special piece will be presented by exceptionally talented singers, who are at home in the vocal style of the period. The title role will be performed by Canadian-Iranian countertenor Cameron Shahbazi, who will share the stage with Italian baritone Renato Dolcini and a great favourite of the Budapest audience, the inimitable Julia Lezhneva.
