Hungarian art. The Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest now joins forces with the Christian Museum of Esztergom for a monographic exhibition to delve into his oeuvre and the era when he worked. In addition to the seven panel paintings that adorned the high altar (1506) in the Church of Saint Catherine in Selmecbánya (Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia) – a monumental masterpiece of late Gothic art – two sculptures that were formerly part of the altar will also be on display. The last comprehensive exhibition of this kind was held more than a quarter of a century ago, and in the interim, many new ideas, research findings and technological innovations have emerged. Recent analyses and investigations have clarified our view of Master M.S., made it possible to locate more precisely his original environment and the artistic regions that determined his style, and allow us to take stock of the diverse stylistic elements of his paintings, as well as to identify other works of art produced by him or by his workshop.

The exhibition is on view between 8 April and 20 July.

This exhibition of the Bartók Spring is jointly presented by Müpa Budapest and the Museum of Fine Arts.
