Branford Marsalis – saxophone, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
Following his autumn concert, one of the most celebrated saxophonists of our time returns to Müpa Budapest, bringing along an outstanding chamber orchestra from New York to the Bartók Spring. The collaboration between Branford Marsalis and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra now stretches back a quarter of a century, and their programme blending jazz and classical traditions is a remarkable product of this close artistic partnership. Jeff Beal’s Ellington arrangement, the Duke’s Harlem suite, weaves together the melodies of numerous jazz standards – paying tribute to both the legendary bandleader and the milieu that inspired him. Beal’s latest concerto, composed expressly for Marsalis by the world-famous master who received two Emmy Awards for the music to House of Cards, is likewise an act of homage. For the second half of the concert, we are transported to Cuba via the music of Ernesto Lecuona, before the evening closes with an exciting orchestration of An American in Paris tailored to Marsalis’s unique abilities.
