The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir and Ton Koopman have played, and continue to play, a prominent role in shaping the practice of the historically informed performance of Baroque music. The names of the ensemble and the conductor have become almost synonymous with Bach’s church music, including the cantatas as well as the Mass in B minor, the St John Passion, and the St Matthew Passion. The latter was first performed exactly 300 years ago, on Good Friday in 1727, in Leipzig. Koopman and his ensembles already performed it in Müpa Budapest, in 2014, and we will now have the pleasure of hearing Maarten Engeltjes, Tilman Lichdi and Klaus Mertens, who were among the soloists of that performance, sing again. The soprano solos will be sung by the inimitable Julia Lezhneva, who most recently appeared in Bach’s monumental work in March 2026, at the prestigious Easter concerts of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. ‘Julia Lezhneva’s “Aus Liebe” provided the emotional climax of the evening,’ wrote a reviewer.
